English 原文
The metal railing cooled under Mae's palm as the wheel eased toward the top.
She had filled pages with this view, yet her pencil paused above a fresh sheet. Down below, plastic tokens clicked in hands, the evening's soft currency passing from booth to booth. Beside her, Warren rested an elbow on the warm bench, leaving space by the window for her sketchbook. A faint vibration traveled through the side panel with each advance, tiny pulses her fingertips could count without looking. Far below, the axle turned on broad bearings, and the spokes carried their quiet load into the sky.
She set the point against the page and tried to catch the slow curve of the fairground’s rim. Lines slid apart as the gondola leveled itself, pendulum-swift in small ways her wrist did not match. From up here the carousel horses looked motionless, their painted legs forever mid-kick above a dark circle of roof. She pressed harder, erased, redrew, and the clock tower angles slipped loose again when the wheel inched another notch. "There," Warren said, voice low, "the clock face catches the last light." Mae tilted the page, then stopped, leaving the drawing open and her hand empty on her lap.
A gust touched the cabin; the floor corrected beneath her shoes, a gentle counterweight somewhere above keeping the bench steady. She leaned back against the seat, lifted a sleeve, and breathed a cloud onto the window until it bloomed opaque. Wind pressed the fabric loose at her wrist and tugged a flyaway hair against the glass. Her fingertip drew a circle through the damp, the clear path widening as moisture retreated from the line she’d made. The bulbs along the rim seemed to synchronize for a breath, then slipped back into their steady chase. Pigment on the railing showed thin at the corner, the color rubbed pale where many hands had rounded that edge. Warren shifted his forearm an inch so her wrist could trace, no words, just space made and taken.
She traced the arc again, this time letting her hand swing from the elbow, the line landing smooth as the cabin settled. Through the glass the fairground spread like a patient dial, stalls and paths arranged by use more than border. Coins winked near the ticket line, small flashes that read as currency even from here. The gondola hovered at the apex, the forward pull briefly absent, and her palm on the rail went still before her eyes registered the tilt. She did not pick up the pencil; the fogged circle thinned at the edges, its center growing clear. Eraser grit dotted the open page by her knee, and the pencil, a shorter stub with a blunted point, lay beside the warm wood.
