English 原文
Every summer, Harriet took the front seat; today her knees settled a notch higher against the fiberglass lip. She planted both feet wide, weight centered, back firm to the molded rise behind her shoulders. Water pulsed past in even bursts, three quick shoves, then a quiet glide. Her right hand drifted toward the channel to skim the surface, paused mid-air, and tucked back to her thigh. The boat’s hull kissed a guide rail; her hips steadied the small sway without looking down.
Before boarding, she and Jude had leaned on the observation bridge, both of them rocking lightly on their heels. A small symposium of ponchos gathered beside them, heads close, comparing splash sizes with friendly nods. Beneath the slats, a maintenance bay showed pipes and a squat filter canister the color of dried leaves. A worker held a rubber gasket the shape of a dark ring and turned it once, checking its seat against the rim. The pump’s thrum rose and dipped in a clean pattern, like a chest taking measured breaths.
“Front seat,” Jude said, with a half-lift of his chin, and he stepped in behind her. The tunnel took them, cool and painted in forest blues and greens. Designed to captivate, the painted otters along the wall chewed an endless ribbon of water, their whiskers kept sharp by careful brushwork. Harriet’s torso leaned right as the boat veered gently against the rail, then she rolled her weight left, the motion small and precise. Water’s resistance spoke through the seat as a steady push against her calves, so she braced a beat earlier than on other rides.
Earlier still, on the gridded walkway beside the loading platform, the metal under Harriet’s soles had a faint spring; her ankles adjusted without thought. The worker lowered that same gasket with a practiced tilt, then eased it flat, one quarter-turn at a time. A roller coaster clacked up its hill nearby; the rhythm landed like pebbles on distant tin. Pennants along the channel’s edge made short, quick angles in the air, then settled. Popcorn scent drifted, and Jude tapped the rail twice, a tiny drum his fingers knew well.
Back in the light, the sky opened above the exit notch, a bright plank of day sliding into the boat. The bow tipped; her knees found twin shallow bowls on the seat lip, places rubbed smooth by countless braces, and her spine set in line with the slope. “Blue up there,” Jude said, not loud, as the twin curtains rose on both sides. The drop answered their posture with a single gliding rush; the pool caught them and spread the splash in a shining fan. The boat rocked once, then once more, and quiet water held their weight evenly. A cool mist stayed on her forearms.
