English 原文
Cool clay dampened Wyatt's fingertips; a thin crescent of moisture darkened the table's edge.
The slab sent up a mineral, river-stone smell, and his thumb left a print that slowly softened.
Viola stood at the wet cloth station, where a clean, earthy scent rose from damp fabric and a shallow bowl.
Between them, the spray bottle waited on the ledge, its plastic carrying faint water and clay odors.
The rolling pin's turning mechanism hummed low, and dry dust on its barrel gave off a chalky scent.
On the stamp shelf, sun-warmed handles released a resin-sweet wood smell, while shaded ones kept a cooler timber note.
Wyatt leaned like a scholar over a dusty diagram, measuring the slab with the flat of his palm.
Wyatt crossed to the shelf and took a square stamp, its handle warm and sap-sweet near the window.
Back at the table, he set the square on the clay and pressed straight down.
A soft thud came first, then a brief wet puff, and a sour dampness edged out.
He lifted the stamp and tilted his head; one side cut deep, the other left only a ghost.
"Any mist left?" Wyatt asked, glancing toward Viola and the bottle beside her bowl.
"Barely," Viola said, unscrewing the cap by the bowl.
She refilled the bottle with clear water and set it upright.
A fresh, cool smell drifted with the first spray as she tested the nozzle over a leftover scrap.
Wyatt sketched a tiny diagram in the clay dust with a fingernail, marking space for border and corners.
He tried the stamp near the edge and earned a crisp block, the scent of damp clay briefly stronger.
At the center, the stamp tilted again, deep on one side and shallow on the other, despite his straight wrist.
He set his palms wider and leaned more on the faint side, letting weight settle until the squelch balanced.
Beside him, Viola misted her slab in a fine cloud, then dotted small rosettes into the moist surface.
Together they shared the bottle in short turns, moving without talk; the border locked like encryption around his tile.
Wyatt finished the line and placed the square back on a cool peg, resin still sweet on his palm.
At the window, a student volunteer slid a damp tile to a lower shelf and straightened a numbered tag.
Viola
