English 原文
Tatum slid a turning board onto the stone beside the basin, and a damp ring shone on the wood grain.
She set a rough linen on the rim, squeezed it once, and cool drops ran across her knuckles in quick beats.
The limestone backdrop behind the basin felt slick with condensation; the cheese-maker moved past, and light grit stayed on her skin.
An apron tugged at her waist, and a hair cover brushed her ears as she lifted the young wheel.
Soap scent lingered on her wrists from the wash at the door, and the cloth edges scratched her palms.
Its rind pressed soft under her thumbs, and the underside kissed the ring and left a tacky print.
She tapped the rim once, and the dull note sent a small kinetic tremor along her chilled fingers.
Nearby, Ives stood at the thermometer wall and said, "The front needle sits higher than the next one."
She rubbed the ring with her palm; water usually spreads and vanishes, yet the spot held and tugged.
A slow squeeze lifted two pale beads from the wheel’s underside, and a damp sweetness sat on her fingertips.
She dipped the linen in brine, the salt rough as sand, and began to wash only the sticky circle.
The cloth drank liquid fast; each pass cleared the patch, and the stack of clean linens thinned by two layers.
She reached for another, and her steps plod across the stone; the top cloths already felt moist at the corners.
On the folded edge, old salt had perforated the weave with tiny pinholes that left dotted drops when she wrung it.
Ives flipped his notebook open; his watch battery kept the second hand ticking as he compared the needles in silence.
With the sticky place clearing, the board showed a ring again, not a spill, but the wheel’s own fresh imprint.
She eased the wheel up, slid a dry strip of board under it, and turned it a quarter onto firmer wood.
A full scrub could gloss the rind smooth but empty the linen stack, so she stopped strokes and kept to dabs.
The cleaned patch showed fine ridges; nearby, the white bloom stayed patchy, and the chalk marks remained clear enough.
She pressed once more with the brine cloth, then set it aside to dry on the basin’s cool lip.
The wheel gave a low thud under a knuckle, and the tremor ran shorter now, a small shiver inside the rind.
Across the junction, Ives checked both dials again and wrote the difference; his pencil pressed a grey line onto the page.
He steadied the notebook on his forearm and pressed the point into paper to record the change.
