English 原文
The bench paint felt chalky under Cal’s thumb as he rubbed the rail. Blue pigment dusted his skin while he traced a shallow groove in the wood. He always tapped his tuning fork while they waited on the platform bench. Gwen sat beside him with their canvas bag and watched the wall clock tick. “Nearly noon,” she said, and her voice stayed soft in the cool shade.
Heat from the sun met the cool air under the awning and held still. Striped sunlight lay across the boards, and the tick sounded rounder in the wooden room. Cal struck the tuning fork on his shoe and held the small instrument by its handle. A thin hum touched his fingertip when he set it on the bench. Footsteps knocked on the footbridge above, and a far whistle answered with a faint echo. The signal bell rang once, and the platform boards began a gentle, even tremble. The hum thinned as the tremble grew, so he gave his wrist a small twist. He slid the fork’s base from the painted wood to the iron support under the seat. The iron carried the sound along the frame, and the bench gave a deeper buzz.
Cal watched the striped shade creep forward while the train slowed and the bell fell quiet. A soft rattle ran through loose window glass, then left the waiting room silent again. The old paint left a pale ring on the fork’s tip and a blue thumbprint. He brushed the dust onto a tissue and tucked it into the canvas bag. He set the tuning fork inside its tin and pressed the lid closed.
