The Missing Basin and the Beam on the Flagstones -

English 原文
From the courtyard doorway, Jude watched the flat chisel meet the ice, each bright crack clear enough to count while breath hung in front of him.
He listened for the small metal ring he knew from the tin basin under the drip, yet only irregular taps on the flagstones answered, thin and dry.
He stepped in, boots dull on snow-dusted flagstones, and a faint citrus tang lifted from his wool cuff.
Faye stood by with her palm on the block; 'It holds, Jude,' she said, voice easy and low.
A crow landed on the courtyard wall, black weight settling on stone, and its head tilted toward the brief snow of chips.
His gloved fingers pressed a clear face, and the slow draw of cold moved through the padding until his palm settled still.
He raised the wooden mallet, set the chisel to the scored line, and frost began to stipple the fresh pane after each strike.
Where he expected the narrow beam to fall, the flagstone stayed pale; light had slid across to another square, a quiet shift at his feet.
Crescents lifted away, feather-light offcuts that surprised his wrist with their small weight and quick release.
The mallet’s heft drew on his forearm, a slow ballast he carried higher, then eased down until wood touched wood.
The drip traced a runnel along the platform’s edge and pattered below; the metal basin leaned by a leg, gathering nothing but thin splashes.
The air carried no scent but cold, a clean blank that met metal, cloth, and skin with the same even draw.
Colour bands woke on the snow where a new facet bent the sun, a shifting atlas of rivers and coasts drawn in cold, moving lines.
He lifted for another tap, paused mid-swing, and lowered the mallet until the head rested, grain against grain, on the handle.
Parallel grooves lined the pane where the edge had passed, scattering light while the polished face beside it sent a sharper path through.
Then he set the chisel a degree flatter, shoulder bearing more of the load, and the bite came clean without the skitter he had braced for.
Meltwater had slicked the wood, and with both palms braced, he pressed the block a hair; Faye’s hand held the far edge from drifting.
The tight beam slid across to his boot and then off, and the groove he carved diverted it again, not at the square he had first watched.
He stopped measuring in hits and numbers; his grip shifted, his elbow rose, and the rhythm thinned until only the chips answered.
When the mallet rested, he stepped back to the doorway that had framed everything, breath leaving in a pale, single rope.
On the flagstones he had first watched, a chalk ring circled an old place for the bowl, a faint crust roughening the dark surface.
Beside that ring, the basin waited against the leg of the platform, its rim cool to the touch and faintly damp.
His glove touched that circle, cool grit under the knit, while the moving beam crossed it and kept going toward the wall.
