The Fifth Egg at the Clay Pot Rim -

English 原文
From the doorway, Glen watched Valda tilt the clay lid; the cotton cloth brushed the rim with a dry hush.
The cylindrical pot stood still on the board, and the room kept its own small sounds—kettle murmur, a wind chime's faint tick.
Valda raised the seal, let the brief alkali-cured aroma climb and fade toward the window, then set the pot beside the board.
"A quiet batch," Valda said, and the knife on the board waited without a scrape until the air lifted clean.
Glen leaned only after that pause, eyes following the amber jelly under the shell as the blade traced the long axis.
The empty pot for the new vintage waited on the bench, and a tray of duck eggs showed their pale ovals under the window.
The paste stood ready, cool and gritty, and Glen pressed it around the first egg with slow palms until the coat held an even thickness.
He lowered the wrapped egg into the pot, and the paste swallowed its weight; the surface settled flat and showed no mark.
Another egg wore its coat and went in the same way, and the hush after each set matched the first with stubborn sameness.
Valda rested a lid above the rim for a breath, and his hand met the center lightly, then lifted away.
A third wrapped egg sank without trace, and Glen paused with the fourth held midair, listening for a change that did not arrive.
Beyond the window, irrigation lines began their thin hiss and clockwork tick, threading a new sound through the kitchen's murmur without nudging the bench.
A small cylindrical bobbin of cotton slipped from a folded towel, rolled the length of the bench, and its tap ricocheted along the tile.
Glen caught it near the leg, set it still, and wiped a grey fingerprint from the thread with the side of the towel.
The interconnection of these quiet things—hiss, tick, chime, muffled settling—held the room steady while the fourth egg disappeared like the others.
He wrapped the fifth and let it down with care, and the contact changed pitch to a brighter, ceramic tap against what lay beneath.
The next one settled high, refusing the paste, and sat proud of level already.
Glen's wrist stopped mid-lower; his ear angled toward the pot mouth, and his breathing thinned until the room's fine hush returned.
Valda slid the cloth into place and held the lid above the rim; his palm pressed the center once, steady and exact.
He did not add another egg; instead he smoothed the rim with paste, easing a neat ring where clay and cloth would meet.
Earlier his hand had met a hovering lid for a breath; now the same hand settled again, and the cloth underneath felt new and dry.
The bobbin rested by the leg, the kettle had quieted, and the irrigation tick went on without hurry through the open window.
Glen kept his palm on the lid as the chime clicked once, and the cool clay held the pressure in a different afternoon.
