When the Brass Rings Fell and One Ring Stayed Warm -

English 原文
Raine rode a carved bay horse that lifted and sank in slow pulses, her palms reading the pole while the saddle pressed a steady counterweight.
Around her, mirrors flashed like a ring of small suns, their voracious glitter crowding her eyes as the platform revolved through a warm, brassy melody.
Annette waited at the railing with a burlap tote slouched against her leg, its coarse weave rubbing the paint as she tracked each shining circuit.
A gallon jug of water leaned near the booth, heavy and clear, a simple ballast for paper cups that threatened to skitter in the park breeze.
Exhilaration lived in the lift and drop, not inside Raine, but in the small pause at the top where gravity gathered her back down.
At the ring point, a brass circle slid into reach, light as a button, and she scooped it with two fingers without loosening her other grip.
The next pass brought another, and then another, the stack on her thumb gaining heft until her wrist protested with a faint downward drag.
Each reach set a tidy dilemma in her hands, because the pole liked two, while the offered arc left space for one hand to fly and meet it.
Annette lifted two fingers as Raine passed again and called, "Three already," her voice bright but light, the wave more like a bookmark than a cue.
Raine tried adding a fourth, then a fifth, the pile riding like a small sleeve on her thumb as the horse rose with a patient push.
On the next lap, the arm extended without a ring, a brief blank where brightness had lived, and her reaching hand slowed midair as the pole vibrated.
The stack tugged her thumb toward the floorboards, countersunk screws holding steady while the platform’s rolling wave lifted her, then settled her, then lifted again.
She pinned the rings with her palm, felt their round edges press like a compact weight, and listened to the melody turn the corner toward the mirrors.
Instead of chasing the empty air, she let her fingers open, and the extra rings slipped from her skin and clinked across the boards behind her.
Annette’s head tilted as the scatter passed, her burlap tote brushing the rail again, not catching anything, only marking the fall with a small stillness.
One ring remained under Raine’s other hand, its brass warming quickly, and the mount’s rise carried her palm upward until the hinge of the motion paused.
She wrapped her fingers around the pole again and breathed in the faint machine oil and cotton candy, the ride’s rhythm finally louder than the chorus of objects.
Annette leaned closer to the rail and said, "I can hold that later," letting the words drift as a simple offer that settled by her feet.
Raine nodded once and kept the circle, her elbows loose now, while the mirrors threw back a narrower picture that fit inside her reach.
The music looped, the horse lifted, and the lone ring rested like a quiet coin against her warm palm as the canopy’s glow held steady.
