Camilo checked the museum corridor while late afternoon light slid along the tiles. He had promised the curator that the wooden ark in the basement store would reach the new hall before nightfall. The object, given years earlier by an anonymous benefactor, rested inside a crate almost as wide as his desk. He rolled an empty hand-cart toward the lift, imagining cedar fragrance once the lid came away. Behind him, the tower clock chimed, and a cleaner switched off corridor lamps one by one.
The basement lock resisted; its tongue refused to slide after seasons of neglect. If the latch had moved easily, Camilo would have lifted the crate within seconds. Instead, he trotted back upstairs, found a tiny oil can, and returned with fingers dotted by fresh stains. A thin ribbon of cooling vapor drifted from ceiling vents, settling over the floor and making the tiles slick. His boot slipped, knees bent sharply, yet his shoulders braced against the crate until balance returned. The cart wheel then sank into the small gap between lift and landing; metal scraped in protest. He knelt, angled the cart, and coaxed the wheel onto solid ground with a quick heave.
At last, the model had been placed beneath display lamps, its polished roof catching newly installed LEDs. As Camilo lowered the side panels, a hidden compartment slid open without warning and released a cluster of folded paper birds. The birds spiralled downward, and several visitors gasped while colors fluttered like confetti in theatre light. Inside the hollow, a brass plate reflected Camilo’s puzzled face; small letters had been etched there. He wished he had brought a dust cloth, because fingerprints already clouded the metal surface. Soft light rested on the miniature ark.
Translation
