Mila woke early and walked toward the garden.

She wanted one shiny apple for the breakfast plate.

Soft grey light filled the sky and the air stayed calm.

Mila placed her shoes aside and began to tiptoe.

A breeze refreshed her cheeks with cool air.

Mila reached the lowest branch and stretched her arm.

Her fingers touched an apple, yet the branch shook.

The sudden motion startled a resting bird above her head.

The bird darted out, wings beating hard against nearby branches.

Loose leaves rained down and knocked a wooden basket sideways.

The basket rolled downhill and stopped beside the small pond.

Mila hurried after it, grabbed the rim, and slipped slightly.

Her foot splashed water, but she steadied and held the basket.

One fallen apple floated near her knee in the clear water.

She dipped the basket under the fruit and lifted it out.

Mila walked back toward the house while the apple rolled inside.
