She steadied it, testing each step with the side of her shoe before rising. The sugar glider remained curled, but the new angle let Dina watch its chest lift and fall.

As Dina descended, the cedar bag shifted; a corner seam had split under the weight. Shavings sifted out like pale rain, spreading across the aisle and drifting under the nearest tank stand. The surprise scattered a pair of curious finches in the display cage above, yet neither Dina nor Hugo moved suddenly. Instead, they knelt together, sweeping the light curls into a shallow mound with their palms. No staff hurried over, so the two fashioned an improvised scoop from an empty plastic cup left on the counter and poured the shavings back into the torn bag. The tool held just enough for each pass, and their alternating rhythm kept the aisle clear. When they finally stood, a thin blanket of cedar dust still traced the tile joints beside the quiet stool.
