Gravel grated under Dean’s boots, the rhythm carrying through the raised beds. Along the nearest path, timer dials hummed in matching strokes, and he noticed a repeating design: every third plot held a dark pyramid of compost topped with pale wood chips, three across and three back, neat as dots on dice. A layer of thick fog at dawn had left the surfaces damp, so each slope kept its sharp edge. Owen shifted a sack on his shoulder, knees bending to balance the load while the two friends studied the tidy rows.
Owen dropped the sack beside their own bed; the soil showed only a shallow dip. He meant to echo the pattern, so he scooped compost with the last trowel from the shed. The handle rocked with each thrust, the motion like a crooked handshake up his arm. The first scoop had been pressed firmly, yet it barely lifted the surface. Unsure of the right height, he added a second load, and the mound began to bulge. Dean fetched half-rotted leaves from the compost corner and spread them as a lighter middle layer, hoping to smooth the pile, yet it slumped sideways. Wanting symmetry, they shoveled a third wave of heavy soil on top; the sides now sagged over the timber frame.
Weight forced the frame outward; screws groaned, and the leaf layer oozed through a gap. Dean crouched, thighs trembling, and remembered a visiting philanthropist who had spoken about air pockets for roots. He slid two fingers into the mound and lifted that slippery blanket, removing a single fraction of the stack. With the middle layer gone, the upper soil slid downward and locked against the base; the bed reached quiet equilibrium. Owen straightened, shoulders loose. Dean swept the loose compost into a narrow ridge along the timber.
