Finn pressed the silver lever on the number-ticket dispenser; a cool puff rose from the slot, drawing several tilted heads. A courier had just parked a foam cooler beside the machine, and the icy surface shivered as warmer air hugged it. Moisture collected, bridging cooler and counter, then ran in thin lines toward the paper stack inside the dispenser. Finn leaned forward, knees bending, and tried to pull a ticket. The strip moved only a finger’s length; damp fibers clung to the metal lip like a reluctant snail. He shifted his grip, shoulders tightening, and gave a longer tug. The ticket tore halfway, leaving frayed edges that refused to separate. Behind the glass entrance, a narrow grove of young maples swayed in afternoon heat, while inside the post office the air felt heavy, as if walls held a myriad tiny breaths.
Condensation spread along the cooler lid and dripped faster. Droplets tapped Finn’s wrist, then seeped into the next layer of tickets, gluing them together. The same resistance returned; his second pull met the same drag, so he angled his arm lower, elbows brushing the gritty counter. The change stretched the damp paper gradually until fibers yielded with a soft hush. A usable ticket now curled in his palm, damp but readable. He steadied the cooler with his free hand and slid it toward the scale area, halting the drip path. Writing on the narrow customs form forced his fingers to step out of your comfort zone, bending awkwardly around the raised plastic edge, yet the work continued. A clerk placed an absorbent pad beneath the cooler, and water gathered there instead of roaming across the desk. Back at the dispenser, the strip that had been smooth now showed ripples from swollen fibers, and the damp top ticket curled upward, its edge sliding slowly toward the floor.
Translation
