Lamplight and the Rolling Orange-

Cool glue skimmed Cyrus’s thumb as he eased a new wheel onto the wooden toy car. A hard circle of lamp-light ringed the glue station, leaving the rest of the table in pooled darkness where clamps stood like quiet silhouettes. The spare wheel gleamed under the glare, yet it refused to slide fully onto the axle; the fit was too snug. Each time Cyrus rocked it, the plastic showed surprising resilience and sprang back, so he trimmed the inner rim with rounded scissors. Beyond the bright circle, a fruit basket waited near the parts box; warm bulbs above had helped the bananas ripen, and the faint sweet smell drifted across the cloth. On the testing zone’s low slope the car would need to roll straight, and Cyrus wanted that done before Nell finished sorting eyes and springs.
A sudden thud broke the hush. An orange had slipped from the basket, bounced through the shadow-edge, and now rolled toward the ramp’s incline where it could crash into drying toys. Cyrus lunged after the glowing orb; the lamp threw his own shape long and thin across the cloth as he caught the fruit just before it dropped. While he crossed the dim stretch to return the runaway, the unclamped wheel stayed alone in the hot halo. He was gone less than a minute, yet when he swung the lamp back he saw the trouble at once: the cooling glue had gripped, and the wheel now fixed itself at a slight angle. A tiny chip on its rim, the kind a geologist might study in real stone, shone in the reflected gleam and proved the tilt couldn’t be ignored.
Cyrus rotated the car under the magnifier, noticing how the uneven light traced a wobble. Removing the wheel risked tearing the soft wood, so he adapted. He shaved a gentle bevel into the axle’s opposite side, allowing the crooked wheel to sit flush. Then he slid a narrow rubber clamp over both parts; its jaws met the curved surface without slipping because he padded them with folded cloth. Shadows tightened as he leaned closer, and he kept pressing the angled axle toward the quiet glow beneath the lamp.
Translation
