A lazy gust rolled a crisp sheet along the folding bench, sending corners flashing under the high glare. The rectangle of bright paper paused at the edge, a pale silhouette against pooled darkness beneath the bench frame. Sara reached from the launch hilltop, caught the sheet before it slipped away, and noticed a faint diagonal pressed across it. She had folded smaller planes during earlier lessons, but none carried such a strange pre-creased line. Its shadow-edge cut the surface cleanly, almost like an accidental scar rather than a planned crease. Below, Greta traced a broad circle with chalk, dust sparking whenever sunlight hit the moving line. Between bench and target, blades of grass shimmered, each narrow blade throwing a tiny reflected-gleam back toward the slope. Fine ridges had been pressed along earlier models by the ruler she kept under the bench.
She finally aimed to glide the plane inside Greta’s fresh chalk ring, exactly twelve paces from the bench. A wavering breeze shifted shadow-strips across that stretch, offering no communication skills between hill and flat ground. On the first throw, a thin thrill rose; the wings hissed, yet the nose touched grass four paces short. Back at the bench, she clipped a small gram of metal to the nose, expecting distance to increase. The second flight reached ten paces, then sagged, proof that the design carried growing pains near its tail. Gathering quiet courage, Sara pressed along the diagonal scar, letting the wings tilt upward and leaving the clip in place. This time the plane sliced through glare, skimmed the final blade, and dropped inside the circle in complete silence.
Sara watched the paper lie inside the bright ring, its shadow edged evenly on the grass. She gathered the remaining sheets, already imagining new folds that might stretch further across the field. At the same moment, Greta walked the far sideline, lifted the last stray plane, and slipped it into the chalk bucket.
Translation
