Stella crouched at the paper edge, her nose wrinkling at the metallic tang curling off the nozzle. An adult knelt farther away, anchoring a second tripod leg firmly with more heavy, flat stones. On the fresh paper, the first passes left narrow turquoise trails along a steady curve. One later splash spread wider, drowning the neat arcs beneath a puddle that smelled of raw chalk. Stella’s gaze fixed on the runnel; to her it looked like a crack splitting the page. The string above creaked again onto the warming paper surface. Its hole had always been tight during earlier quiet morning swings on this same sheet. Now the liquid escaped in a noisy gush, soaking the surface beneath the bottle’s slight plastic overhang.

As the smell grew drier and almost crisp, Heath wanted the swings to regain their slim rhythm. He unhooked the bottle, pressed a blade of grass into the hole, and shook until a gentle drip returned. He re-hung the bottle, and the adjustment worked for three fragrant swings before the swollen leaf blocked the flow. The pendulum slowed, leaving a silent gap that spoiled the pattern’s growing ring for Stella.

A stray breeze slipped under a maple branch’s overhang, twisting the string so the next pass drew an ellipse across older arcs. Heath stepped back from the sheet, and the pendulum bottle swayed on, letting chalk-scented droplets tap a fading beat.
