The hook dangled bare, a shiny curve flashing where the dough bait no longer clung. Lyle leaned closer, catching the yeast-sour scent still smeared on the metal, then eyed the mid-dock shade zone where small ripples darkened the water. A mallard drifted nearby, its feathers giving off a wet, earthy whiff each time it paddled. The float had fallen short of that shadow on his last cast, so, in a last-minute decision, he tugged open the tackle box; spare leader strands lay coiled inside, some ends already falling out of their paper sleeve. Ronan, seated behind him with charcoal sticks that smelled like cold, burnt wood, paused sketching and murmured, "Mood shift in the light already." Lyle nodded, looped one short strand to the main line, and cast again. The float landed with a dull plop, releasing a faint algae-tinged splash, but it still hung two arm-lengths from the feeding shadow.
The sun dipped lower, warming the resin-sweet planks unevenly, so tiny pitch beads gave off a stronger aroma. Lyle added a second strand; tarry wax on its knot left a chalky taste on his fingertip, yet the extension alone remained too short. If the line slipped, the float would drift toward the rope-wrapped post and lose contact with the clearer water beyond. A sudden change in wind carried a metallic tang across the lake, and the float bobbed away from the target zone again. Lyle drew the third and final spare piece—its surface smelled faintly of medicinal oil—tied it on, and flicked the rod forward. The combined length unfurled; at once the float crossed the shadow’s edge, then the light current tugged it straight under the willow leaves. Water pushed the line around a hanging frond, but Lyle raised the rod tip sharply, stopping the sweep before the loop could snag. A scale, loosened by the splash, spun onto the plank beside his shoe, glimmering as it twirled toward the cooler, root-stirred water.
Translation
