Mud That Balanced the Wheel-

English Original
A thick glug followed by a low gulp rose from the basin beside Mabel’s wheel—what had made the water so heavy today? She pressed a mud-caked sponge into it and the liquid answered with another muffled gulp, coating the sponge with gritty slip instead of clean water. Mabel’s goal stayed simple: keep the spinning cup slick so the wooden rib could glide. She had paused earlier to organize her tools, yet this basin clearly had been left untouched; its contents had been thickened by countless rinses. At her weekday job as a junior researcher, she always used discretion and would validate results before recording anything. Here she tried the same care, squeezing the sponge once more, but the clay grit scraped against the vessel wall and left ragged grooves.
She tipped the basin, hoping to pour the sludge into a bucket; a slow slosh became a sudden surge, and a ribbon of grey slip sprang over the splash pan, slapped the spinning cup, and flung outward with a smack against the foot pedal. The cup lurched off-centre, the wheel hummed a higher pitch, and the pedal’s metal spring jolted, sending vibrations through the stool. If the basin had been emptied earlier, the slip would not have leapt so far. Mabel’s shoulders tightened while the wheel continued to whir. Yet the new ridge of heavy slip on the thinner side of the cup began to act like a counterweight; the wobble lessened instead of worsening. She had never planned that, but the very thickness that blocked her sponge now steadied the form. Using both palms she gathered more of the dense mixture and gently patted small coils onto the light side, letting centrifugal force blend them into an even wall.
The cascade still trickled across the floor, so she slid a wooden rib onto the tiles as a quiet barrier; the flow slowed, then curved around the makeshift dam toward the drain. She lifted her foot, the wheel eased into a softer hum, and the clay cylinder rotated smoothly. Two shelves away, Pearl arranged greenware on the drying rack; a single droplet tapped her shoe and rolled onward, crossing the plank like a tiny traveller heading for the far corner.
Translation
