Fresh wheel streaks had dried on the entrance mat when Everett steered the cart toward the damp produce corner, the stuck front wheel scrubbing sideways with each push.

The boy stopped beside pyramid trays of grapes; dim light under the top shelf left the lower bunches looking deeper purple. His grandparent, a retired zoologist, compared two bags near the scale while a small sparrow pecked crumbs along the floor tiles. Everett wanted a fuller snack pouch, so he lifted one soft bunch into the thin plastic bag, mindful of the stems that pricked through the film. The bag still sagged loosely, so he added a second, heavier cluster, letting it settle with a rubbery thud.

The weight felt promising. Hoping for perfect roundness, he slipped in a third cluster, and the handles stretched, creasing white stress lines across the plastic. A single grape popped free, skipped over the rubber mat, and rolled toward the sparrow. The bird darted after it; its sudden rush stirred a cricket hiding between damp lettuce leaves, and the insect sprang into the air. The cricket landed on the scale’s touch screen, selecting an unfamiliar code; a red sticker slid from the printer declaring the grapes to be onions. Water mist puffed again as tubing above reacted to the flutter, cool droplets beading on Everett’s fingers and making the slippery bag twist.

He pinched the middle cluster and eased it back out; two bunches slapped together and rested evenly, the strained handles relaxing. With the extra weight gone, the sticker sensor cleared, and the cricket hopped away when Everett brushed the screen, stopping the accidental selections. The correct label printed, and the sparrow continued to nudge the runaway grape beneath a metal grate. If another grape escaped, it would follow the same path across the grooves. Thirteen loose grapes now rolled inside the clearer, lighter bag, tapping softly against the lower seam.

他捏住中間那串葡萄，慢慢抽出；剩下的兩串碰在一起，提把的拉力隨即放鬆。多餘重量去除後，誤貼的感應復原，他撥開螢幕上的蟋蟀，停止連續錯按。正確標籤列印出來，而麻雀把那顆逃跑的葡萄推到金屬格柵下。如果再有葡萄落地，路徑很可能依舊沿著溝槽前進。現在袋裡還剩十三顆散葡萄，輕輕在透明底角碰撞發出小聲的敲擊。
