What makes that soft pop? Hedy asks the open sand. She taps a bubble of foam. It bursts and tiny drops jump. Eli, her nephew, laughs nearby. He lifts a smooth pebble. "Listen!" he says. He lets the pebble tap a dry board. A hollow knock follows.

Hedy kneels on the wet sand. Sand clings to her knee. She pokes a quiet tide pool. A small crab darts sideways. Water rings spread. The strong salty smell drifts in. The sun is warm. She pats a rock cave mouth. Air moves from the shaded gap. One bird step sinks into wet sand. The soft pop sounds again.
