Bea pressed a small mirror with its smooth plastic back onto a sun-warmed hardback, and the chill startled her fingertips. Dust lines danced in the entering beam as she nudged the book until a square bounced toward the centre of the room. A tabby cat on the sill tracked the light, and Yolanda flipped a magazine near the curtains. The book beneath the mirror had been printed by a wildlife photographer; glossy pages felt almost hot, and the heat softened the spine just enough to sag. That tiny bend unseated the mirror, its grip on the cover loosened, and the spot jumped onto a chair leg instead of the next reflector. The chain needed a knack for steady positioning. Bea grabbed a rolled safari poster from the supply box, wedged it beside the book, tilted the mirror again, and saw the beam smear a hand-span low on the white card.
She knelt in the adjustment zone, carpet weave pressing into her knees, when a cloud crossed the sun and the square dimmed. Brightness snapped back, yet the shifting sun had changed the entry angle; the spot now crawled toward the skirting board. Warm air rose along the beam, embracing a loose paper and making it twitch, while a corridor draft added another wobble. If the spot wandered again, the cat would spring after it. Bea tore a strip of tape, pinned the hot hardback to the table, then braced a fresh mirror against a cooler wooden block for firmer grip. The angle returned, though fresh heat soon began to bow the block. Late in the afternoon she slid two metal rulers into the curtain gap, blocking extra light and arresting the cascade. On the target wall, a round bright patch drifted across the card’s lower edge.
Translation
