Story Content
English Original
"Look at the windowsill."
A sparrow lands on it, claws ticking on warm wood as sunlight paints faint color onto the towel. Emmet steadies the blue glass near the light; water beads slide over cold sides and slick his fingers. The red and yellow stand in shadow, their rims damp and cool, and each celery stalk feels firm and grooved. When he nudges one, glass rings clear; the cut end presses down, ridges rough against his thumb and the towel. The towel under the row bunches at its edge, thick where it is wet, and the glasses wobble. He tries to mend that fold with two fingers, but it springs back when the damp weave grips his skin. He lifts his wrist and buttons up his cuff, keeping the cotton from soaking on the cold glass. At the counter, his grandparent turns a recipe book, dry pages brushing like leaves across the tiled surface.
He wants to catch the first blue line inside the stalk and mark its height in the notebook. He steadies the magnifying glass, but condensation slicks the blue glass; the ruler nudges, slips, and leaves no steady point. He wipes the side; beads gather again from the chill, beading like tiny oil, and the measure keeps drifting. The sparrow hops along the sill and pecks a clear bead on the shaded frame; a pencil rattles after his elbow nudges. He watches its beak choose the cooler shade where moisture beads; the sunny strip near the window stays almost dry. He folds the thick towel into a hard wedge, the same bulky thickness that made wobble, and braces the blue glass tilted. At the supply shelf, he tips a thimble of blue into it; the deeper side darkens along the cut. A single grooved vein near the low rim starts to stripe; he almost lifts the stalk but keeps it planted. He leans toward his grandparent to confide a quiet guess, then lowers the lens until the stripe fills its round edge. Colored light pools on the towel; the sparrow tilts its head once, then resumes pecking at clear, cool drops. Beside the sink, the stacked pile holds only four dry paper towels left on top. Emmet draws a pencil mark at one finger-width below the rim on the blue glass.
Translation
