English Original
Wet fingers already squeezed a strip of cloth above the rinsing basin; Eli's sleeve dripped onto the bench. A shallow tub held a deep indigo stillness, and a sharp, herbal tang sat in the air. Ian set his small square beside the folded stack, aiming for a wavy edge pattern. His sibling worked with quick, zestful dips that sent soft ripples across the surface today. Ian lifted a feather duster from the shelf and brushed dust off the dry line, light as foam. He leaned in to lower his square, but Eli’s cloth widened in the basin and brushed his knuckles. Water slicked their fingers, and the two damp edges stuck together briefly like fresh labels. Ian pulled back, shifted his feet, and waited one slow beat; when Eli lifted, he slid his square under. Drips tapped the wood, dye cooled his wrists, and sunlight lay flat across the tubs.
The square fought the water, small bubbles holding sections up so the blue grabbed in patches. His grip loosened as the wet weight grew, and one corner slid until his thumb found cloth again. He changed angle, pressed the air out with a slow sweep, then raised the fabric through air in one line. A clothespin above clicked loose, dropped into the tub, and widened a ring that lapped across his square. Eli let out an exasperated puff through his nose, then rocked his piece away from the small wave. "I've got it," Ian said, curling his arm to shelter the cloth as the ripple faded. When he opened the cloth, a wavy border shaped the edge, and a pale oval sat near a corner. He clipped it to the line; wet hem heavier than dry, drops beading along the thread like tiny glass. At the far end of the yard, Harriet lifted onion-skin yellow from a basin and shook water from the fringe. On the back porch, Opal pinned a pale scarf, and the cloth creaked softly as the breeze moved it.
Translation
