English 原文
Mila balanced a covered clay pot against her ribs while velvet dusk still hung over River Street. The local midsummer procession already drifted past, drums echoing between wooden balconies. She had promised her grandmother to place the hot soup at the hill-top pavilion before the first lantern reached it. According to neighbors, the soup’s herbs offered spiritual nourishment for pilgrims who paused there after worship. Lantern bearers shuffled forward, and bright ribbons brushed Mila’s sleeve, yet she kept moving uphill. If she had waited at home, the broth would have cooled, so her steps pressed on despite swirling music.
Halfway up, a sudden shower forced umbrellas open, and the street narrowed under colorful arches. The pot’s lid rattled, and warm liquid sloshed close to the rim. A drummer slipped sideways, and his stick suddenly spun toward her ankle. She sidestepped, yet the heavy pot tugged downward and her shoulders tightened. The main staircase to the pavilion had been blocked by dancers lifting paper animals. Mila ducked into a narrow side alley behind the crowded market stalls. Steam escaped through the small lid hole, slowly fogging her round glasses. She exchanged a grin with a flower vendor, but another obstacle appeared: a rope barrier marked fresh paint on the final step. If she had chosen that staircase earlier, splashes might have ruined her skirt.
At the hill-top terrace she discovered an identical pot already resting on the long table beside glowing lanterns. Her eyebrows rose, yet movement behind the screen solved the puzzle: her younger cousin, Nico, raised a ladle with theatrical flair. He had carried a second batch by bicycle before the procession even started. Instead of a frown, quick laughter burst from her chest, and the cousins began serving visitors whose hands trembled after the damp climb. Soft chimes above the gate carried a spiritual tone that mingled with rising steam. The shared work created gentle bonding among strangers as bowls touched wooden benches. When both pots finally reached their bottoms, the rain clouds slowly drifted away. Steam hovered above the two half-empty pots while evening light rested on the long table.
