Clara pushed the old side door, and a scent of stone rushed out of the empty nave. Sunbeams crossed the floor in varying angles, like paths drawn for her project. She had planned an arch of fresh willow branches, tied to a wooden trellis that would stand where the choir once gathered. A small bronze sickle, inherited from her grandfather, swung from her belt; it had been polished for this single task. The schedule had been printed weeks earlier, yet the space still waited bare, so she hurried across the cracked tiles, laid the trellis flat, and began trimming the long branches.

A clump of ivy clung to the southern wall, blocking her reach. She sliced through one vine, but the next slipped away, and leaves scattered over the floor. When she tried lifting the trellis upright, the rear peg jammed between two tiles. If she had checked the gap first, the frame would not have stuck at all. She shoved once, twice, and the peg broke free, yet the sudden motion knocked her bundle of willow to the ground. She gathered them again, climbed a folding chair, and started looping green ribbons around the highest rung. The chair wobbled. She stepped down, breathed, dragged a heavier bench forward, and balanced on that instead. Little by little the pale branches curved overhead, forming a living canopy.

As Clara tied the last ribbon, wings flashed near the rose window. A small thrush darted inside, circled the nave, and settled on the highest willow twig. Its weight pressed the branch downward, giving the arch a gentle bend she had not designed. She froze, hands raised, then eased the ribbon once more so the curve stayed even. The bird tucked its head without a sound while dust drifted through colored light. Evening light rested on the quiet trellis beneath the nave.

克拉拉綁好最後一條絲帶時，玫瑰窗附近閃過翅影。一隻小畫眉飛進長廊，盤旋後落在最高的柳枝上。枝條因它的重量下壓，拱形出現了她未曾設計的柔和曲線。她雙手停在空中，又輕輕調整絲帶，讓弧度保持平順。鳥兒無聲地把頭藏進羽翼，塵埃在彩光中漂浮。傍晚的光線停在長廊下安靜的格架上。
