Amber pushed the garden gate and stepped toward the tall lookout that stood behind the community greenhouse. A warm breeze glided through nettle leaves and carried the smell of cut grass. The first ladder rung creaked but held. Halfway up, resistance grew: a warped step slipped from her boot, and her hands jerked against the rails. She paused, shoulders tight, then shifted weight to the side beam. Dust drifted down, brushing the blackbird’s wings; the animal shot to a nearby post yet stayed close. Near the landing, another problem emerged—an iron latch had been painted years earlier and was now sealed in a brittle shell. If Amber had carried a screwdriver, she would have pried it at once. Instead, she pressed her palm again and again until the old paint cracked. The gate finally swung outward; the effort left her breath short but steady.

Wind met her on the platform and pushed hair across her eyes. She crouched, searched for balance, and then straightened. Below, the blackbird fluttered upward, landing beside her like a tiny guardian. The view was memorable: late sunlight bounced off water, rooftops glittered, and distant train tracks seemed to hum. What surprised her most, however, was a row of bright solar panels fixed to a shed roof she had never noticed from the ground; they caught the sun and radiated thin stripes of silver toward the sky. The platform flooring rested in calm shadow while the blackbird’s feathers lay smooth along the rail.
