Beside her walked Leo, her assistant, balancing a tripod and an aging camera. The main path veered around broad fern beds, so they ducked beneath leaves shining with moisture. Near the fountain the garden steward, Mr. Haynes, pointed toward a shaft of sunlight and then returned to trimming vines without another word. A flicker of green darted over the water, then vanished behind hanging roots. Mira pressed the shutter, and nothing clicked; the battery light blinked red. If the battery had lasted, she would have captured the image sooner. Leo rummaged for a spare cell, but only loose screws rattled inside the pouch. Meanwhile the insect swooped again, this time circling the glass roof before settling on a rusty pipe high above their heads. The real emerald species, he added, might still arrive when summer deepened. Research notes would need rewriting, yet curiosity sharpened every gesture as the small device rested on Mira’s open palm, its metal wings silent.
