English 原文
Mild sunlight slid over Granite Square as Emilia threaded through early shoppers and rolled barrows. A tall cylinder of varnished maple tapped against her knee at every stride; inside, she believed, lay the revised elevation for the new reading hall. Ahead, cranes criss-crossed above the half-built library, their cables jangling. An owl, apparently unbothered by the metallic racket, sat on the hook of the nearest boom and swivelled its head at the milling crowd. Emilia lifted the tube in greeting to the bird, then stepped beneath the first arch of temporary fencing. The constructor stood on a platform of steel scaffold near the entrance, dark helmet catching the light. Emilia raised a hand to signal him, slipped past a stack of bricks, and climbed the narrow path toward the humming generators.
At the turn of the walkway, a hinged gate resisted her push. The latch clanged but held, so she leaned her shoulder again; this time the rusted tongue slid, releasing a sharp squeal that spun two nearby workers around. One of them lifted a paint-specked brow, then returned to tightening bolts. Emilia reached the platform and unfastened the tube’s brass cap. Before the parchment appeared, a glossy pheasant burst outward, wings drumming against her forearm. She flinched; the roll slipped, bounced off the railing, and landed on a cement bag. The startled bird shot upward through the open roof frame, showering loose gravel onto helmets below. A plank rattled, buckets rattled harder, and a thin cloud of lime rose across the space. The constructor ducked, hardhat tipping, while the owl launched from the crane and wheeled inside after the intruder.
Feathers and dust swirled together above the reading hall’s skeleton. The owl glided along a beam, clipped the pheasant’s tail, and both birds spiralled toward the bare floor. At the last instant the pheasant veered, banked through a window gap, and vanished over the square, leaving only a faint spray of down. The owl flared its wings, regained balance, and settled on a crossbar. Beneath the commotion, a visiting scribe had been sketching the façade; loose sheets now drifted like pale leaves, some settling in wet mortar, others fluttering onto helmets. The scribe gathered them in quick armfuls while workers steadied buckets and nudged planks back into place. Emilia retrieved the map tube, cheeks dotted with white lime, and exchanged a wordless shrug with the constructor. Gradually the hammering resumed, and dust floated between the steel scaffold and the quiet rafters.
