Mara finally reached the grassy ridge above the village shortly after the midday sun. Soft light spread through the valley, and tiled roofs glittered like pebbles in shallow water. Distant fields had been divided by neat hedges that looked like stitching on green cloth. She set down her easel while restless fingers drummed on the wooden frame. She had studied the landscape since childhood and had already traced its curves that morning. Now she wanted a wide canvas for the harvest display near the central well. A farmer rattled past behind her, yet she hardly noticed the cart’s uneven rhythm. Paint pots lined the grass, and a brush tapped against her palm, waiting for color.

The first sweep of blue struck trouble as a sudden gust snapped the canvas like a sail. If the wind had eased, her careful lines would have stayed sharp on the fabric. Instead the charcoal outline tore free and tumbled downhill, scattering black dust over grass. She tied fresh rope around the frame, and her shoulders loosened under the firmer tension. Soon a line of cattle clambered onto the ridge, blocking half the view with slow bodies. A herdsman guided them downward, yet the path had been churned into slippery clay by hooves. Mara shifted onto a higher boulder and lifted her brush toward the clearing horizon.

She had almost finished the distant river ribbon when another distraction rolled out of nowhere. The same farmer steered his wagon around a rut, and one wheel dipped without warning. A curtain of runny mud sprang forward and slapped the canvas in wide looping streaks. Brown drops crawled across the blue sky she had mixed for twenty long minutes. Her mouth opened, then her wrist moved, shaping the splatter into distant birds over the roofs. She blended ochre with the mud, and feathered wings brightened beneath the sliding sun. By dusk accidental marks and planned strokes joined, forming a lively scene above the small village. The finished canvas rested against the stone wall beside her silent easel.

當她幾乎完成遠處如絲帶的河流時，意外又突然出現。剛才那位農夫駕車繞過車轍，一個輪子猛然陷落。薄稠的泥幕飛出，在畫布上畫出大而彎曲的條痕。棕色滴點爬過她花二十分鐘調出的藍天。她張著嘴，手腕卻開始動作，把泥點變成屋簷上方的遠鳥。她把赭色與泥混合，羽翼在滑落的夕陽下變亮。黃昏時，偶然的斑痕與精心的筆觸結合，在小村上空形成生動畫面。完成的畫布靠在石牆旁，寂靜的畫架相伴。
