Warm afternoon light lay across the roof while Lara balanced on a narrow plank between two skylights. A gust lifted dust against her sleeves, but she held position; the solarpanel in front of her showed no blink on its tiny indicator. She had already checked the inverter that morning, so the silent roof seemed the last place to look. One cautious step forward tilted the plank, and white paint flaked from its edge.

The frame refused to rise on her first pull; several screws had been stripped by rust. Lara fetched a small mallet from her tool belt and tapped the corner. The jolt sent a metallic impact through the gutter and echoed down the drainpipe. If the wind had risen again, the panel would have slid off the roof. On the second attempt the frame lifted, revealing a tangled sata cable wedged against the support bar. She eased the cable free, but the screwdriver slipped from her palm and clattered over tiles before settling in a valley of moss.

She wished she had brought the magnetic tray. Kneeling now, Lara looped the cable back into its housing and tightened a fresh screw. The current indicator flashed green, then steadied. The panel, however, still rocked in its brackets. She looked around and spotted an old wooden off-cut near the chimney. The surface felt trustworthy despite faded varnish, and its width matched the gap. After sliding the block under the frame, she tapped until the wobble stopped. A sudden rustle exposed a small nest just beneath the panel; two wide eyes of a young lizard glimmered, then disappeared into shadow. Lara shuffled back, leaving a finger’s breadth of air for the hidden tenant.
