Thin afternoon light slanted through the workshop’s high windows while Leo and Mara arranged cardboard rings, plastic straws, and wires across the scarred wooden bench. The science fair opened at dawn, and their goal sat in pieces: a scale space station inspired by a visit to an astronaut training pool where mock modules had bobbed like metal whales. Warm air rose from a nearby radiator, carrying a faint smell of glue; somewhere below, a fan hummed against concrete walls. Leo had already labeled each segment, yet his fingers drummed against the bench when one ring rolled off and clattered onto the floor.

First they tried tape as a quick solution. Several joints had been wrapped, but the ring still slid free the moment Mara lifted the frame, and droplets of glue splattered her sleeve. If Leo had measured the inner rim twice, the gap would have vanished, yet the two students only exchanged a brief shrug and turned back to work. Mara drilled tiny holes, threaded wire through the straws, and twisted the ends with pliers; the frame stiffened, then bent again when a heavier module clicked into place. Heads lowering closer to the table, they adjusted angles, trimmed straw ends, and braced new crossbeams until the structure finally held.

After midnight the reinforced lattice felt almost indestructible beneath their palms. They carried it toward an open window to watch reflected streetlights dance along its silver edges. A sudden gust cut through the gap, toppled the unfinished station, and sent papers skidding like startled birds. The model spun once, struck the floor, and rolled against a toolbox; wires trembled but remained unbroken. Leo’s eyebrows lifted, and Mara’s shoulders eased as she lifted the station again. Their destination—the school gym—waited for morning display, yet fresh tape now looped around the battered rim. The patched model rested on the table, edges quiet under the settling dust.
