Springtime air carried faint warmth across the school yard. Leo balanced a bright paper kite shaped like a butterfly, while Mara gripped the thin reel. They had planned to lift it above the football goal before class ended. Shouts from a game spilled over the grass, and small balls crossed their path without warning. A sudden drift of breeze teased the kite’s tail yet vanished at once, leaving the paper body limp. The frame had been tested at home, yet today the space felt narrower, and the wind less steady. They stepped back and scanned the yard, searching for a calmer pocket of sky.

A sandy pit, which the gardeners had not watered all winter, waited near the fence and looked like a tiny desert. No children stood there, so Mara pointed and walked first. The breeze returned, blowing grains across her shoes. They raised the kite again. This time the wind pulled harder, but the string slipped, and the kite began to wander sideways. It dipped toward an old branch where a silkworm cocoon hung like a pale drop. For a moment the paper wing brushed the branch, yet the strand was caught only by a loose knot that had been tied yesterday. Leo pinched the string lower, replaced the knot, and the kite climbed smoothly. Above the sand, colored paper fluttered against blue sky.

操場邊有一個沙坑，園丁整個冬天都沒澆水，看起來像袖珍沙漠，沒有人站在那裡。Mara 指了指，先走過去。微風再度出現，細沙吹到她的鞋面。他們重新舉起風箏。這一次風力更強，但線滑了一下，風箏開始斜斜地漂移。它俯衝向一截老枝，枝上懸著一枚蠶繭，像淺色水滴。紙翼擦過枝頭，線卻只被昨天綁上的鬆結卡住。Leo 捏住較低的線段，換了新的結，風箏便平穩上升。沙地上方，彩紙在藍天前輕輕翻動。
