The tap’s refusal left him baffled, yet the herbs drooped under layers of dry soil, adding urgency to his dilemma. During the struggle to fit the mallet behind the handle, grit scraped his knuckles, but the extra leverage brought only a harsh creak. The pipe shook, releasing nothing.
