English 原文
Mara dragged a folded banner across the empty dining floor of the corner restaurant. Tonight the street would fill for the annual community celebration. She wanted the cloth stretched above the doorway before the first visitor arrived. Faint garlic steam drifted from the back stove while a ceiling fan pushed slow shadows over varnished tables. The room offered a sensory mix of sizzling oil, chopped herbs, and old varnish. Framed pictures of the chef’s earliest culinary creations hung crookedly beside the windows. Near her feet, a ginger cat threaded between chair legs and paused, tail flicking at drifting dust. The banner, sewn years earlier, showed a delightful pairing of blue and gold lines. Sunlight had faded some fibers, so a pale border marked the passage of many seasons.
Mara hauled an old stepladder from storage, but the second rung had split and the wood wobbled beneath her boot. If the ladder were sound, the task would finish in minutes easily. She stepped down again and reached for a broom handle to use as an improvised pole. The hook above the doorway had been painted last winter; dried layers gripped the metal and refused to turn. She wedged a spoon between hook and frame, and the tool creaked yet the angle barely shifted. Meanwhile, the cat perched on the lowest step of the ladder, ears high, twitching at every small vibration. Mara raised the banner with the broom, aiming its loop toward the stubborn hook. Instead, cloth slid free and drooped across a simmering pot of tomato sauce.
A red splash leapt from the pot and speckled the blue fabric before she could pull it back. Steam clouded her glasses; the cat sprang aside as drops pattered onto tile. Mara plunged the banner into the sink, and water swirled rose then pink around her wrists. When she lifted it again, the stain had spread into swirling shapes that echoed the restaurant’s tiled floor. Seeing the new pattern, she wrung the cloth and climbed a stack of crates. From the top box she pressed the loop with the broom handle once more. Moist fibers gripped the rough metal, and this time the banner held. Evening light hung behind the stained cloth in a muted rectangle.
