A narrow railway cut through a canyon toward a dark tunnel on the far side. A small plastic maiden in a faded red dress stood on a ridge above the gorge. Cool air drifted through the open window, carrying a scent of old glue and paper. Thin sunlight slid slowly across the cracked riverbed. Their routine was clear: brush away dust, patch broken edges, and finish before the afternoon bell.

An umbrella, forgotten behind a chair, caught the same breeze and toppled forward. Its curved handle struck a shelf, jolting a tin of blue paint. The tin rolled off, bounced once, and burst open against the model. Paint rushed along the cardboard river, poured into the canyon, and disappeared inside the tunnel. Inside the hidden valley, the wet load softened the base, so the whole gorge section sagged. The maiden figure toppled, sliding toward the flooded edge. Tom braced one hand under the bending frame. Lena shoved a ruler across the gap to halt the slide. She scooped cloth scraps to soak the spreading paint. He sawed two spare wooden strips from a broken crate. Together they wedged the strips under the warped corner. The surface lifted a little, and the blue flow slowed to sticky drips. Two wooden wedges now propped the crooked frame, each striped with a different blue smear from opposite hands. Somewhere behind them, the umbrella cloth kept fluttering against the chair leg.
