English 原文
Scent of ripe mango and peppery basil drifted beneath the striped canopy. Olive knelt beside her fruit stall, staring at an empty wooden stand that once carried grapefruits. A rugged crate as wide as her shoulders blocked the narrow aisle, its greatness in width forcing her to shift one knee sideways whenever a cart rolled past. Thin elastic netting, left from orange bundles, dangled from a hook near the awning. Olive pinched one strip, stretched it across the stand, and caught its end on a nail head. The netting flexed, then held the first row of bright rind pieces she arranged for a sample tray. A lean market cat watched from a shelf, tail twitching each time the strip bounced.
Olive liked the first stripe so she tried again. She lifted another strip, this time pulling it tighter across a steeper angle. The band hummed with tautness and made a rebound when she let go, shaking a single coin that rested on the scale nearby. Above her head, a banner sagged toward the ground, its heroic length pinned by two fraying cords; each gust made the fabric flap and snap back. Light tucked between awnings touched the orange peels, showing dots of moisture on their surface. Along the stall a tourist with an adventure backpack lifted a loaf thick enough for a hero sandwich and nodded at the price tag before disappearing behind a bag rack.
For the third try Olive chose the most rugged strip, thicker and shorter. She pressed her foot against the crate for balance, drew the strip hard, and hooked it lower, forming a triangle. The sudden tension made the earlier bands tighten; the stack of peels shifted but stayed in place. The watching cat sprang, pawed at the triangle, and the strip sprang back with a soft twang that startled the animal into retreat. A playful grin spread across nearby faces, yet Olive only checked the edges, then wrote a quick total on a receipt. She slid the empty basket under the web of bands. The criss-crossed cords kept their neat shape above it.
