The departure board clicked again and again, each slap of plastic louder than the soft hum of the waiting lights. A striped cat crouched near the platform edge, batting a crinkled foil wrapper that chimed against the tiles. Every smack threw a new flash across its whiskers; the glare bounced from roof panels, then danced along the wrapper’s folds.

Above, sunbeams mingled with colored panes in the glass awning, painting moving bars of red and green over benches and bags. A whistle thrilled the thin iron rail, and a daredevil sparrow shot through the shifting colors, scooping crumbs with one fast dip between wheels. The cat stalked on, shoulder low, tail stiff. A pigeon strutted close, wings half spread, ignoring nearby boots with a fearless tilt of the head. Steam from the arriving engine brushed across everything, leaving a faint metallic flavor on the cool air.

When the schedule board flipped once more, a sudden silver reflection leapt from its surface onto the foil scrap. Light flared straight into the cat’s eyes; the startled animal veered, and a back paw nudged the wrapper over the yellow line. At the same instant, a fresh beam struck the sparrow’s path, and the little bird darted higher. The wrapper slid into a shallow puddle beside the rail; water ripples warped the bright patch, dulling the shine. The cat paused, ears twisting, then sprang onto a bench where shadows offered calmer ground. The board kept rotating, but its mirrors now pointed away, sending weaker glints that skimmed harmlessly across the platform. Above the roof, the colored bars slowed as a cloud covered the sun, and the long striped shape on the tiles stayed unchanged.
