Sweet basil floated above the sharper soap smell inside the laundry room. Grey turned the small gear beneath the old mangle, and damp towels spiraled between the wooden rollers. Owen stood opposite, ready to catch each flattened sheet before it recoiled. Steam rose from the copper washer and made their sleeves cling. A ceiling pulley wheel squeaked softly as a row of shirts orbited overhead on a looped rope. In pauses between cranks, Grey paused to admire tiny beads sliding on the green tile. Each bead spun like a small glass marble. The room felt busy yet measured, and the routine repeated with almost clocklike rhythm.

Halfway through the basket, the crank began to wobble. Heat had loosened the belt, and the main cog no longer gripped every tooth. Each turn demanded more force, and water splattered in wider spirals. The tub groaned under the fullness of soaked blankets, but Grey disliked stopping. He shifted his feet and chose a lower stance. He let his elbows stretch out so his weight helped the rotation. Owen mirrored the posture; their shoulders moved like linked pistons, slow yet even. The rollers resumed a steady whirl, though an occasional shudder ran along the shaft. A contented hum rose from the washer as the drum spun on.
