Hana heaved a damp canvas basket onto the smooth metal lid of the sole washing machine. Warm suds pressed through the cloth and cooled against her wrists. Blake squeezed beside her, fingers tapping the textured dial. They had planned to finish the last load within a tight timeframe; a costume-rental deadline hung one hour ahead. A small porcelain crucible filled with violet detergent pellets balanced on a narrow shelf above them, its rim gritty with dried soap.

When Blake shifted the basket, the rim nudged a leaning broom. The wooden shaft tipped, scraped over chipped paint, and struck a plastic dustpan hanging from a hook. The dustpan clattered onto the machine’s vibrating side panel, then slid down, knocking the cold water valve. A thin stream hissed out, ran along the ridged floor tiles, and slipped through the drain grid. Below the laundry room, the water emerged along the stairwell wall, dripping onto a cardboard box left on the lower balcony. The softened box sagged; inside it, a glazed clay cormorant rocked forward, its beak scraping the rail.

A muffled thud carried up the stairwell, and Hana leaned over the railing. If the elevator were free, she would have dashed down, yet footsteps echoed inside the lift cage. She rushed down the stairs instead; Blake followed, shoes squeaking on wet concrete. The sagging box folded further, and the bird figurine edged outward. Blake had been blocked by a drying rack, but he slid it aside just in time. As the cormorant tipped, Hana thrust her arm across the slick balcony rail. Her palm caught the rough ceramic wing, and the sculpture wobbled, still sliding toward her open fingertips.

樓梯間傳來一聲悶響，哈娜俯身越過扶手。如果電梯空著，她早就衝下去了，但升降機裡響著腳步聲。她改跑樓梯；布雷克跟在後面，鞋底在濕混凝土上吱吱作響。紙箱持續下陷，鳥形雕像愈靠愈外。曬衣架擋住布雷克，但他即時把它推開。當陶鵜鶘開始傾倒，哈娜把手臂伸過濕滑的陽台欄杆，她的手掌抓到粗糙的陶翼，雕像仍在她張開的指縫間微微滑動。
