A sweet, herb-sharp splash raced across the carpet in a thin stream. The flow slipped under the return cart wheels; the cart lurched forward, pages rustling like dry leaves. Sara planted her shoe against the lower rail, stopping the drift before the cart grazed the checkout counter. If the flow reached the atlas volumes, the edges would darken, so she folded one corner of the carpet into a low barrier that trapped the liquid in a shallow pool.
