English 原文

The sharp tang of wet iron drifted through the fog, and beside that smell a single hoof-shaped dent pressed into the shining grass. A darker rim of earth rimmed the trace, as though something heavy had stood just long enough for water to collect and settle.

Zara, confident the mark belonged to a grazing pony, waved Felix closer; the researcher balanced a canvas crate against his hip, its wooden slats knocking softly. Boot soles wet, Felix crouched and brushed one edge of the print; a curl of pale sediment clung to his fingertip, too fine for any farm animal. What puzzled her was the way the print ended abruptly—no second step, no drag, no split line where a hoof might slip. Only then did Zara notice the shallower imprint between the larger ones, a pointed cleft no horse could have left.

They moved in widening spirals, the confidant pair trading quiet glances as more paired hollows emerged, each sharper than the last, each filled with chilly water that carried the same iron scent. Seldom had the meadow offered such tidy evidence, yet each clue eroded Zara’s early certainty. At the fourth set she halted, weight shifting from heel to toe; the new hollows pointed in opposite directions, as if two creatures had paused nose to nose. "Maybe not hooves at all," Felix whispered, though the mist swallowed most of his voice. She tapped her thumbnail against the crate’s lid, reconsidering what sort of thing deserved collecting.

No sooner had Felix lifted the lid than a sour puff of damp grass escaped, and within it a flutter of smell—resin, char, something like longing made physical. The small decision passed between them without speech: continue. Zara slipped her palm under a nearby tuft and tilted it; beneath, a narrow object of packed earth surfaced, printed with the same cleft pattern. It cracked along a seam, exposing a hollow core lined with coppery flakes. The first prints had not been footsteps at all; they were casts, discarded shells of growth that brewed in darkness before rising through the soaked soil.

Minutes later the fog thinned, then closed again. Water inside the abandoned shells glittered, catching what little light remained; beside them, the open crate waited, inner boards filmed by a faint copper dust.
