The Crack Under the Carousel Paint-

English 原文
Seth leaned against the railing and watched a boy in a knitted cap study a narrow wet streak on the flank of the lead horse. That line glimmered like diluted ink, a leftover thread from the sleet that still dripped off the canopy in slow, uneven beads. Beyond the platform a ticket booth mirrored bulbs in its cloudy windowpane, the reflections wobbling each time the horses rose. Seth counted three more streaks sliding down neighboring mounts, each one widening as the ride revolved.
He stepped onto the platform; his boot soles skidded where water had pooled around the brass pole. His gloves damp, Seth slid them into his back pocket and searched for a cloth. Each time he bent, the carousel nudged forward, and the horse lifted just beyond his reach. A low squeak rose beneath the boards, faint at first. It sharpened with every turn, as though the cam were chewing on a grain of basalt caught in its track. Over the music Troy, a visiting physician with a white scarf tucked into his coat, pressed two fingers against the pole to feel the vibration. They shared a kindred spirit of quiet troubleshooting, so Seth nodded and twisted the nearest retaining screw three quarter-turns.
The squeak vanished, yet the rhythm shifted; the lead horse now rose higher, slinging droplets onto the boy’s shoulders. Only then did the glassy bead sliding down the saddle split, revealing a fine spiderweb crack beneath the paint. Seth froze, palm hovering above the screw he had just forced tight. Loosening it would revive the noise; leaving it would widen the fracture. He eased the screw back two turns, and the floor settled as though the pole were softer than seasoned cedar. Beside him Troy stepped away, checking the planks with his heel before moving toward the exit.
The organ fell silent; faint vibration lingered in the brass poles. Water streaks shone on three saddles, the loosened screw glinted beside the pole, and a dark basalt pebble rested motionless on the wooden boards.
