When the Wet Field Held Together-

English 原文
Moist wood grain pressed under Nell's thumb as she steadied the tilted board. The lower half of the paper still gleamed, a silver-blue mirror where the wash lay wet, while the upper half—already a nutmeg brown hillside—had turned matte and fixed. Her goal was clear: flood the remaining eight centimetres with a fresh green field before the drying boundary claimed that territory. She had prepared a puddle of colour by coaxing leftover blue and a touch of yellow-brown from the palette; the mix filled only half a brush. A fine line had been produced by the smallest brush for a distant fence along the horizon. One quick sweep carried the paint across three horizontal centimetres. The sheen remained unbroken there, yet a darker band of uncovered paper lingered below. A grey cat, drawn by the quiet swish, crouched beside the stand, nose twitching as if expecting a treat from this curious show.
Nell dipped the brush into the rinse cup; the cider-tinted water clouded further as pigment spun in tiny spirals. She scraped liquid from the largest well, added two drops, and produced another puddle. The brush handle felt slightly swollen from earlier rinses. Left under warm sun, that cloudy mix would ferment into a faint sour smell by morning. The second pass stretched colour three more centimetres, leaving only a narrow strip of white. During the pause, a breeze skimmed the paper; if the air cooled further, the wet surface would lose its shine too fast. She reached for fresh water, yet the cat’s tail bumped the brush jar. A single drop splashed onto the already-dry hillside, blooming a pale ring. Nell wiped the splatter, waited one counted breath, then lifted fine crusts of green from the palette rim. With hurried strokes she laid the last ribbon. The moment the lower edge met the earlier band, the entire field glimmered as one continuous pool; then the shine began to fade, the threshold finally crossed. A sparrow on the fence flicked damp feathers and darted toward the open sky.
