She had already lifted a broad base stone; its underside felt almost glassy except for one tiny blister. She settled it onto a river-smooth foundation, and her fingertips stayed in touch with the cool surface for a silent count of three. A gust skimmed across the open bank, pushing against her knuckles; the weight shifted, the base rocked, and water in the waiting tin cup quivered. At that moment a finch fluttered down, landing on the cup’s rim and tipping a silver bead of water onto Hazel’s wrist.

Hazel slid the tin cup beneath the raised edge as a quick buffer, its thin rim biting neatly under the blister; the first layer steadied. While she balanced two more stones—one river-wet and slick, one bank-dry and gritty—the bird circled above her boots, chirping at the vanished drink. Pebbles near her heel shivered; a small mole nosed into the open, sifted a few grains with velvet paws, then vanished again, leaving a loose patch that shifted underfoot. Hazel glanced at the bird, the vacant cup, and the now-stable tower; fixing the base had erased the water the finch relied on.

Grant’s return from the waterline brought a cool, flat stone and a half-filled bottle. He knelt, slid the damp slab under the base, and together their palms pressed along every edge until the layers held firm. Hazel poured a thin stream back into the cup, set it two paces off, and the finch dipped its beak almost immediately. The added slab nudged the structure off-center, so Hazel removed one slick stone, accepting a tower that rose one layer lower yet stood steady in the breeze. Spray from the bottle still clung to the surfaces, sparkling like tiny mirrors. Hazel was reaching for another grainy pebble as the tower held its narrow line in the moving air.
