English 原文
Sticky warmth clung to Atlas’s fingertips as he nudged the wooden spoon deeper into the foaming, ruby mixture. Sweet steam drifted upward, carrying a sugar-rich scent that mixed with the vinegar tang from the sterilising basin. The thermometer had been hovering at one-hundred-four degrees, yet the syrup tasted bright and still flowed too freely. Atlas had waited for this quiet reunion of summer berries, a yearly bounty boiled down to jars before school. His grandmother steadied the kettle, and the cat, Fleur, sat on the windowsill sniffing the air with twitching whiskers. Atlas collected a cold plate from the freezer, dropped a ruby bead onto it, and waited the proper thirty seconds. The bead slid slowly when he tapped it, proving the set unfinished, so he raised the flame a fraction. Stirring in gentle circles, he hoped to foster even heat while sugar crystals slipped back, yet foam returned quickly.
Another minute passed; Atlas repeated the plate test, but the bead still refused to wrinkle, only thickened round its edges. He inched the gas dial lower, switched to a wider wooden spoon, and held each stir longer against the kettle wall. The spoon had been placed on the rim, yet Fleur’s tail nudged the handle, sending it clattering against a stack of lids. The top lid bounced, struck the rubber-gripped tongs, and the tongs toppled, knocking a household item—the wide-mouth funnel—onto the tiles. The funnel rolled, bumped the sterilising basin, and water sloshed out, a sour wave threatening to unravel the neat jar row. Grandmother swept the tongs upward and caught the final spinning lid, halting the chain before glass met the wet floor.
Atlas wiped the spoon, repeated the plate test a third time, and watched the bead thicken at its centre. A shallow skin formed when he pushed it gently, yet a lazy trickle still crept from the edge. Grandmother lowered the flame until it whispered, letting the mixture breathe while warm berry perfume filled every corner. One silver lid kept turning slowly beside the mat, its edge tracing a damp crescent that widened with every quiet rotation.
