English 原文
The hose reel rattled under the dim roof of the watering station, its metal core echoing against timber before quiet returned. Morning glare spilled through the bean-pole frames and drew ladder-shaped stripes across Tobias’s raised bed. He aimed to send water all the way to a pale corner where young lettuce bent in the brightness, yet the nozzle stopped three plots short. The garden’s simple infrastructure—spigot, timer, and half-filled reel—left only one path: pull harder. Tobias leaned back; the reel yielded a short hiss of hose, perhaps two arm-lengths, then locked again. Moist gravel pressed into his shoes, and the lettuce leaves kept folding along their shadow-edge.
A low crunch announced Vivian stepping from a nearby path, silhouette outlined by a shaft of light that cut between rosemary stalks. She gripped the reel housing, and together they rocked it from side to side; the jammed coil shifted but still refused. If the reel jammed again, they would need the spare watering can that had been left beside the tool shed. Instead, Vivian slipped one hand beneath the hose, gave it a brief uplift, and Tobias pulled once more. The loop slid free in a sudden sweep, and five extra arm-lengths raced toward the bed. A thin arch of water crossed the final gap; wet soil darkened instantly, glare turning to muted shine. Just then the timer dial clicked toward zero—an unexpected reminder that every shared minute counted.
Steam lifted where the stream struck aromatic basil, mixing with the sweet-sour breath from compost bins nearby. Bees drifted through the shifting bands of brightness, and faint gossip from gardeners beyond the hedge rose and faded like distant radio static. Wooden stakes set at equal gaps promote harmony between criss-crossing vines and the narrow aisles, yet a single rogue tendril now dangled in front of the spray. Tobias kept pressing the trigger, eyes on that swaying line, while his free hand was reaching for the timer dial.
