Warm cloth brushed against Tobias’s palms as he pressed the chequered blanket flat over the uneven grass. He had planned a neat, almost aesthetic picnic scene for himself and Joel, who lay uphill leafing through a paperback. Plates, forks, and a tall juice flask crowded the centre flat, leaving little elbow room. The hidden ridge below drew the flask toward the downhill corner; the metal base slid faster and nudged a plastic cup. Tobias lunged, knees digging into the soft weave, and caught the cup before liquid reached the rim. He rolled a spare napkin into a tight pad and slid it under the flask, hoping the friction would hold. The bottle stayed still, yet a faint wobble warned that the slope still had the advantage.

Before he breathed out, the dog pricked its ears toward a distant bray from a donkey near the park path. The leash, tied to the basket handle, jerked as the animal tried to take a leap toward the sound. The sudden yank dragged the wicker anchor sideways; containers tilted, and the lid dropped, trapping the serving spoon inside. Juice threatened to topple again. Tobias pushed one hand against the shifting basket and, with the other, snatched the sturdy frisbee lying on the grass border. He jammed its rim under the uphill slat like a wedge, locking the basket against the slope. He looped the leash twice through the frisbee’s hollow centre, so the pull reached the plastic disc, not the food. The arrangement steadied; plates stopped sliding, though crumbs sprinkled the cloth.

By evening the slope lay empty. The sun had drifted behind the tall oaks, and a cooler breeze pressed the blanket closer to the earth. The frisbee remained under the basket, its yellow rim speckled with dry grass, while a faint ridge marked the plates’ former line. Two tiny crumbs rested near the downhill corner; ants marched between them in silent patterns. A flattened patch showed where a paperback had lain, the pages gone. Across the quiet cloth, shadow and colour thinned under the fading dusk.

傍晚時，斜坡已空無一人。太陽滑到高橡樹後，涼風把毯子更緊貼地面。飛盤仍楔在籃下，黃色邊緣沾滿乾草，淡淡草脊標記出盤子曾經的位置。兩粒小麵包屑停在下坡角，螞蟻在其間無聲行進。一塊被壓平的痕跡顯示書本曾放在那裡，如今已收走。靜靜的布面上，陰影和顏色在漸暗的黃昏中逐漸淡去。
