Her sudden motion startled the nearest pigeon; the bird burst upward, its wings brushing a second pigeon that lost balance and kicked a dry twig from the warm side of the rim into the middle basin. The twig spun, struck the falling sheet, and threw a thin, cold fan of spray outward. Tiny drops spotted the page before the drawing smeared, yet Tamsin jerked the notebook away, holding it above shoulder height. Mist cooled her arm, but the graphite lines survived. The twig drifted aside, water regained its heavier course, and the pigeons regrouped farther along the slippery stone, their bodies settling into quieter hops. Corbin’s camera clicked from the bench, but he said nothing; the plaza rhythm continued without pause. A faint rustle of wings drifted across the plaza.
