English 原文
"Keep the stones in place," Colette called. Grant braced the wicker basket uphill while the pale blanket lifted and fell like a slow wave. A blue-grey shadow from the nearby tree sliced across their sitting area, dividing warm cloth from cool. Colette set a round paper plate of crisp vegetable chips near the centre flat, but a sudden breeze folded the fabric under it. The plate rocked, slid along the hidden ridge, and half the crisps scattered toward the downhill corner. She lunged, gathering them before the dog’s twitching nose could reach them, then positioned two small pebbles beside the plate as makeshift brakes. The snack looked safe again, though the pebbles barely reached the rim.
A new gust arrived moments later, stronger and colder, lifting the middle cloth despite the stones. The paper plate was being swept downhill once more, and the scattered crisps rolled ahead of it like tiny wheels. Colette had regretted leaving the heavier clips on the distant bench; crossing ten paces now would strip the blanket of both sitters. Instead, she grabbed the bright frisbee from the grass border and slid its flat edge under the plate, hoping the wider base would fight the slope. Grant steadied the basket with one hand while the dog tried to cuddle against his knee, leash wrapped in a silver spiral around the thermos. The frisbee slowed the drift, yet the plate still edged forward whenever the cloth billowed.
Determined to finish their lunch intact, Colette stretched across the blue squares and reached for the last smooth pebble near the uphill edge. At the same moment, a line of ants surfaced through the weave, circling a dropped crisp beneath the chrysanthemum-patterned napkins; the small surprise forced her to lift the napkins quickly, but it did not stop her work. She wedged the final pebble against the frisbee, forming a low ridge that met the plate’s rim. The cloth flattened; nothing moved. The final pebble tapped the corner tight, and her palm lay empty against the blue-grey cloth.
