English 原文
"Pass me the green one," Xena said.
Hana nudged the balloon bag closer, shaking out its dry, powdery smell that clung like chalk to the warm air. The room carried an exquisite mix of aromas—sugary icing drifting from the kitchen doorway, faint rubber from the pump nozzle, and a sweet petunia note from a single flower on the windowsill. Some ribbons had been trimmed by Hana earlier and lay in neat coils beside the pump. Xena’s goal stayed simple: finish the second batch of six balloons before guests arrived. She slipped the cool latex mouth onto the silver pump; eight strokes filled the shape, each hiss releasing a gust tasting faintly of metal. When she reached for the string, the roll had knotted into a tight lump. Fingers sank into the snarled loops; the more she tugged, the tighter the spirals dug in; the whole process stalled.
A thick ribbon of airing balloon still hugged the nozzle, so Xena changed tactics. She left the stubborn knot on the table and crossed the floor zone, sliding a marble coaster from under the cake stand; its cool surface carried an earthy whiff. The sugary air formed a tiny paradise for any wandering insect. She pinned one loose end beneath the coaster, then pumped again. Extra strokes were needed—the worn gasket leaked, and the balloon swallowed ten breaths before rounding out. A hallway draught nudged the sphere toward the streamer wall; thin rubber brushed paper, peeling tape and starting a gentle sag along the row. Hana set a chair under the corner, pressing the streamer flat until new adhesive gripped.
Xena plucked the orange balloon from the pump while Hana chose a firm blue one from the earlier batch. They compared them, pressing noses close; a mild rubber sweetness rose from the softer skin, whereas the tighter sphere carried a sharper latex bite. Xena held the softer orange sphere, while Hana steadied the firmer blue one beside it. Both balloons drifted upward between them, ribbons brushing their wrists as the bright ceiling-light bounced on each curved surface.
